Meeting Clients Where They Are

One thing I’ve been reminded of lately in my executive coaching work: It’s not always a good idea to stick rigidly to the plan. Even when coaching goals and strategies are clearly defined, I’ve noticed lately that clients often arrive with something else weighing on their minds. Especially in todays world. And that’s where the real work needs to begin.

Coaching is most impactful when we meet clients where their energy is—whether that’s a pressing challenge, an unexpected opportunity, or simply what’s keeping them up at night. Sometimes the most powerful breakthroughs come not from the agenda we set, but from the conversation the client needs in that moment.

Coaches: how do you balance structured goals with the flexibility to follow the client’s energy?
